Job Descriptions

The Foreman is a strategic leader for both the Electrical and Data-Comm divisions, responsible for overseeing field installations and ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget for labor, materials, and equipment costs. The Foreman represents field conditions to upper management and oversees training, development, and motivation of field employees. Key duties include detailed project planning, budget coordination, risk resolution, and proactive communication within the project team. The role involves professional leadership, adherence to safety standards, and effective coordination of tools and manpower. For a General Foreman, additional responsibilities include overseeing multiple projects, supporting project Foremen, and ensuring alignment with Kearney company standards.

  • Demonstrated exceptional ability to lead and direct crews exceeding 5 people.
  • High school graduate or GED. Trade school or apprenticeship desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan ahead and use sound judgment in decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately and legibly complete paperwork, and to maintain files and job documentation.
  • Demonstrated exceptional organizational and leadership skill, and strong communication skills.
  • 6 years verifiable work experience in the trade with a record of successfully demonstrating mechanical skills, code knowledge, theory, installation skills and safety practices.

The Leadman in the Electrical and DataComm divisions provides vital support to the Field Manager by managing and directing the field installation of assigned projects, ensuring timely completion within budgeted labor, material, and equipment costs while maintaining high standards of workmanship and safety. The Leadman oversees and directs assigned team members, emphasizing effective communication with the field manager. Duties encompass leading and directing crews, training and developing field employees, ensuring work quality and safety, and maintaining positive client relationships. The role requires exceptional organizational and leadership skills and sound judgment, while providing accurate insights into field problems and supporting the company’s needs.

  • Direct, layout, and assign duties and tasks to assigned crew to meet the progress and schedule of the job.

  • Able to accurately and legibly complete paperwork and to maintain files and jobsite documentation.

The Journeyman Electrician is a primary field employee in the Electrical division responsible for the precise and timely installation of electrical work, emphasizing safety and superior quality. Their duties include coordinating tasks, training colleagues, and staying current with industry codes and standards. In a leadership role, they set the work pace, provide a positive example, and demonstrate competence in various areas such as tool knowledge, blueprint reading, and branch wiring. With a focus on safety and professionalism, the Journeyman Electrician contributes to Kearney’s values and standards, showcasing autonomy and supervision skills while maintaining a high standard of excellence.

  • Familiarity with NEC Code
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical blueprints and drawings
  • Install, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems
  • Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble and install electrical conduit, using such tools as band saw, pipe threaders, and conduit bender
  • Install distribution apparatus, such as switches, relays, and circuit-breaker panels, fastening in place with screws or bolts, using hand and power tools
  • Connect power cables to equipment, such as transformers, switch gear and motors, and install grounding leads

Journeyman Levels by verifiable hours and knowledge in trade or certification from approved trade training program:

J1: 7500hrs // J2: 12000hrs // J3: 14000hrs

The Communications Technician is the primary role for the Data-Comm division, allowing progressive advancement within the position based on experience, knowledge, and responsibility. Technicians demonstrate competence in areas such as theory knowledge, troubleshooting, and terminating different types of connectivity. The Technician role is divided into three levels, with responsibilities ranging from cable installation to advanced troubleshooting and mentoring, as well as leading, training, and coaching assigned team members. Experience, education, and skills are specified for each level, highlighting the progressive growth and expertise expected in this position. Technicians are vital in contributing to the company’s high standards in the Data-Comm field.

  • Install cable tray and supports correctly
  • Rough in various types of cable above ceiling or raised floor
  • Dress cables in pathways, work areas, down a wall and/or through modular furniture
  • Terminate CAT5E, CAT6, CAT6A, RG6, RG11 jacks
  • Mount faceplates and surface mount boxes correctly and adhere to cabling standards
  • Assemble racks and/or cabinets
  • Develop basic skills in terminating patch panels and wiring blocks.

Technician Levels:

T1: 1 year experience and able to understand and install various categories of copper and fiber optics cables.
T2: 2 years experience and able to perform advance troubleshooting, use a fluke tester properly and accurately certify and document results, and have a proven skill level to interpret blueprints and project documents.
T3: 5 years experience and able to install and terminate high pair copper backbone, troubleshoot and resolve technical issues as they arise, train and mentor T1/T2’s to improve skills, and perform quality checks and compile test results.

Fiber Tech: T3 level experience and able to:

  • Route, breakout and dress fiber, and prep for termination of multi-type cables
  • Polish anaerobic connectors for all types of cables
  • Understand and complete fusion splicing, pigtails, and connectors
  • Troubleshooting to include OTDR, VFL, and/or visual inspections
  • Complete splice case buildouts to include set up and splice

The Apprentice Electrician, plays a pivotal role in Kearney’s ongoing success in its Electrical division. Responsible for timely task performance with a focus on quality workmanship and safety, the Apprentice continually learns all aspects of the electrical trade, including installation techniques, code, and theory. Their duties include completing assigned tasks, maintaining personal production goals, installing electrical work, and ensuring a safe work environment. The Apprentice communicates professionally, advises supervisors of material needs in advance, and attends training and safety meetings. They also demonstrate a working knowledge of tools, codes, and safety practices, and contribute to Kearney’s core values.

A1: 1000 verifiable hours and show a willingness to learn and a mechanical aptitude.
A2: 3000 verifiable hours and developing proficiency in branch piping, fixture installation, and fixture make-up skills.
A3: 6000 verifiable hours and demonstrated proficiency in branch wiring and developing proficiency in branch make-up and feeder wire skills.
A4: 9000 verifiable hours and demonstrated proficiency in theory knowledge, panel make-up and transformer make-up skills and developing proficiency in fire alarm systems and basic control circuits.

A Helper is the starting level for both the Electrical and DataComm divisions. The Helper is tasked with continuously expanding their knowledge in the trade, encompassing practical installation techniques, practices, code, and theory. Helpers support both service technicians and field crews and are committed to the timely execution of assigned tasks, ensuring quality workmanship and the highest safety standards. They maintain a self-motivated and professional demeanor, effectively communicating with their lead and team. Responsibilities include completing assigned tasks, adhering to proper work pace and productivity, and complying with Kearney’s policies and procedures in a professional manner. The Helper actively contributes to the overall success of the company.

The Service Team is comprised of both Data-Comm Technicians and Lead Electricians that have demonstrated professional conduct, adherence to company policies, exceptional organizational skills, and effective communication with field operations, dispatch, and clients. The Service Team is entrusted with the management, direction, and execution of field installations or repairs for assigned commercial or industrial projects, ensuring timely completion within budgeted labor, material, and equipment costs while upholding the highest standards of workmanship and safety. The Team is assigned a helper or another technician/electrician and occasionally may be asked to lead a crew of up to 10. Responsibilities encompass troubleshooting, risk resolution, and coaching field employees to enhance their skills.

  • Utilize Journeyman (Electric) or Fiber Technician (Comms) level technical skills with a record of successfully demonstrating competence in mechanical skills, code knowledge, theory, installation skills and safety practices
  • Produce and oversee quality workmanship
